Integrated Social Studies

Does the Ohio Graduation Test make you a little nervous?  No reason to sweat it!  With this course you will not only investigate some really cool things about our country's incredible history, but you will also learn some interesting tricks that just may make the OGT not so hard after all! Current World Issues

This is a full year, two-semester course that examines past and current historical events from around the world and how they relate to the United States. This is an optional course and students receive ½ credit each semester. This course enables the student to explore various past and current issues and events and examine how these impact their personal daily life.  (1/2 credit per semester)

Economics

You may not realize it, but every time you make a choice, you are applying economic reasoning. In this course, students will learn the main concepts behind the science of economics. Students will also be exposed to the practical side of economics and learn how to be a wise decision-maker in our global economy.  (Semester class 1/2 credit)

20th Century American History

The purpose of this course is to acquaint, interpret, and experience American History through the exposure of a print- and technology-oriented classroom environment along with an ongoing connection to current-day events.  This is accomplished through a longitudinal study of historical trends and events that contemporary Americans have lived.  This includes both world wars, the 1950’s, the Civil Rights era, Vietnam, Watergate, Social Activism, the ending of the Cold War, and the hopes of a new millennium.  (1/2 credit per semester)

US Government

US Government involves the study of federal, state and local governments. We will be investigating the Constitution, voting and elections, the branches of government, as well as the role they play in society and how you can become an active, involved citizen. As time permits, we will also be discussing our governmental system in light of current events. (1/2 credit per semester)

Honors Government

Honors Government is a college prep course based on US Government. It is taught at an accelerated pace which focuses on the analysis and function of national, state, and local government as well as issues involving government intervention. Higher level thinking skills are emphasized. This is an advanced course and completion of frequent homework assignments and outside reading is a must. (1 credit per year)

Psychology

The purpose of this course is to equip students with knowledge of themselves and how they can best adjust and adapt to changes in the world.  This is accomplished through the study of what psychology is, how our bodies and minds function, how humans learn, how growth and development are related, the impact of personality, overall health and adjustment factors, and how humans adapt socially. (Semester class 1/2 credit)

Sociology

This course introduces students to a varied and changing cultural world.  Students are challenged to view themselves as an integral participant in society, while preserving their cultural values and norms.  Cultural and social structure, the individual in society, social inequality, social institutions, and the changing social world comprise the major areas of study.  This prepares the student to examine the relationship between themselves and society in an ever-changing world filled with challenges, advancement, and opportunity.  (Semester class 1/2 credit)

Street Law

This course’s approach to law-related education is to provide practical information and problem solving opportunities that develop knowledge and skill necessary for survival in our law saturated society. Students learn that the American legal system is the foundation of American society. In order to function effectively, students examine those laws which have an impact on citizens’ lives and are provided with an introduction to fundamental civil and criminal justice procedures. (1/2 credit per semester)
